Listen Here: Snoop Dogg ft. Mavado & Popcaan – “Lighters Up”
December 15, 2012 § Leave a comment
Snoop Dogg has recently been making the transition to a reggae artist, adopting the moniker “Snoop Lion”. In efforts to prove himself, he has once again teamed up with producers Major Lazer and Dre Skull for his third single “Lighters Up”.
The uplifting song is about unity and loving your fellow brother, but it is ironic how neither Dancehall artist references the other. It is highly probable that the two did not record together. It would have been a more meaningful song – to Jamaicans specifically – if the two had acknowledged each other to continue the end of the Gully/Gaza tension.

Snoop Dogg’s reggae album Reincarnated will be released early 2013.

Newly signed “We The Best” member Mavado released a new video for his first single off the label, “Emergency.” Featuring labelmate Ace Hood, the grimy song has signs of becoming a street anthem.
The beat is fire and I’m always happy to see Dancehall artists getting more mainstream exposure.

Newcomer Laza Morgan dominated Summer 2011 with his dancehall party smash, “One By One.” Featuring Mavado, the track is feel-good and makes you want to dance with that special someone.
I’ve had this song on repeat ever since I first heard it in Jamaica this past July, so I’m excited to finally see an accompanying music video!

Dancehall Riddim of the Moment: “Overproof” (2011)
December 8, 2011 § Leave a comment
2011 has been an amazing year for Dancehall music, so I always get excited whenever a new riddim drops. The “Overproof” riddim has been on constant replay for me ever since it was released in August.
The riddim has a fun and flirty vibe that is perfect for those last steamy nights of summer, yet it had the staying quality to last throughout the rest of the due to the many solid tracks on the riddim.
“Overproof Riddim”, produced by JA Production, has a massive selection of Dancehall, Reggae, Soca and Pop songs which makes it suitable for everyone.
It’s difficult to choose, but my favorite tracks on the riddim are:
1. Mavado – “Settle Down”
2. Aidonia – “Caribbean Girl”
3. Navino – “Chilling Time”

This week was a strong one for Dancehall, as two of its biggest artists debuted new music videos! Popcaan, Vybz Kartel’s protegé, dropped his video for his hit song “Clean”, rocking fresh snapbacks fitting for the title Snapback riddim. Singjay Mavado released his video for “Settle Down”, one of the biggest “end of summer” singles this year off the Overproof riddim. Popcaan gives us Jamaican swag while Mavado shows off his softer side for the ladies.
