Jay Z Extends Magna Carta World Tour To North America: See The Dates

September 6, 2013 § Leave a comment

Just as Kanye West announced his upcoming Yeezus tour, his “big brother” Jay Z has decided to up the ante by adding a North American leg to his Magna Carta World Tour (did they plan it this way?). These dates will follow up the epic Legends of the Summer stadium tour with Justin Timberlake that conquered the US earlier this year.

The North American trek will hit 33 cities, with its first stop in St. Paul, MN on November 30. Jay Z will also perform at Staples Center in Los Angeles, his lady’s city of Houston and of course his hometown of Brooklyn (for two nights). He’ll wrap up the tour January 31 with a show at Penn State. Tickets go on sale Thursday, September 12.

From the looks of it, there are no opening acts. But Hova is notorious for bringing out special guests at his shows, so a surprise performance is bound to happen. Check out the extended tour dates for the Magna Carta World Tour below. Keep reading…

‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ v. ‘Yeezus’ – Who Owns The Throne? Cast Your Vote!

July 15, 2013 § Leave a comment

Jay-Z and Kanye West, otherwise known as The Throne, give us incredible music when brought together in the studio. But what happens when the two rap legends of our generation break off into their own path? Within weeks of each other, West released his sixth studio album Yeezus while Jay-Z dropped his twelfth album Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Both rappers packaged their album releases to suit their personalities: West with the ultimate anti-promotion and Hova with his mega-million deal with Samsung. Also, both albums have completely different sonic vibes: Yeezus is visceral, dangerous and incredibly emotive while MCHB is boisterous, eye-opening and incredibly rich. I’m a huge fan of The Throne, so my opinion is not biased – both albums are solid.

But I do think Yeezus is the stronger album of the two. It breaks musical boundaries with its production and West’s unapologetic attitude. No one could have predicted that album from him, while on the other hand MCHG has sonic and lyrical notes that we’ve heard from Jay-Z in the past. It’s evident how comfortable he was on this album, but West had no holds barred. But don’t take my word for it…I want to know your opinion on the albums!

Which album reigned the highest? Vote below:

It was a close race, but according to your votes Yeezus ranks higher than Magna Carta Holy Grail!

Jay-Z – Magna Carta Holy Grail: Album Review

July 11, 2013 § 3 Comments

After the game-changer that was Watch The Throne, no one was expecting another Jay-Z album for a while. But the ever-unpredictable rapper made a major announcement of his twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The way the album was advertised (thanks Samsung) says a lot about how Shawn Carter has grown from drug dealer to business man to record label founder to label flop back to CEO and now a new father. It deals with a variety of old (money, art, politics) and new (fear, fame, fatherhood) subjects, which all make for a well-rounded (and borderline insanely produced – Yeezus holds the insane title) project.

The most captivating track on the album is the opener: “Holy Grail.” It begins with Justin Timberlake crooning over a haunting piano-driven melody, which is definitely one of the best vocal performances of his career. The song talks about the perils of fame, where these celebrities are walking a fine line between hope and destruction. The sample of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is madly genius yet unsurprisingly fitting – Kurt Cobain was famously anti-fame. “Holy Grail” is a truly beautiful song, an adjective that’s rarely used in relation to the rapper. It sets the tone for the grandeur of the album.

“Picasso Baby” seems to be Jay-Z’s current favorite off the album, as he recently performed it for six hours as a performance art display. It has typical crazed Hova tongue-twisting wordplay albeit it’s more sloppy than exciting: “I just want a Picasso, in my casa / No, my castle / I’m a hassa, no I’m a asshole”. He spits numerous art references on the track – something to be expected from the avid art collector. Timbaland’s influence is all over this record, especially in “Tom Ford.” The lofty percussion mixed with untamed synths instantly makes you want to bop – it’s just nasty. And what makes it better is the little taste of Beyonce a la “I Been On” towards the end.

“Oceans” (featuring Frank Ocean) is one of the standout tracks off MCHG. Ocean’s voice is always welcome, this time his velvety voice has an interesting reggae/southern tinge to it. The song picks up where Watch The Throne left off, with its important message of us Blacks taking back our culture (“The only Christopher I acknowlege is Wallace”). Keep reading!
