New Music: Liu Bei – “Atlas World”

After the positive feedback from their debut single “Infatuation,” paradYse/Transgressive Records’ latest signee Liu Bei has released the accompanying b-side titled “Atlas World.”
The song is a beautifully cloudy haze, with frontman Richard Walters’ lush vocals anchored by bold drums and tinkering synths. The uplifting quality of the rhythms is well juxtaposed by the somber lyrics, which are quite emotive: “And the Devil can’t see me, he can’t bring me home to hell.” Overall, it is a refreshing take on pop music that isn’t afraid to be sonically daring.
The London-based band (pronounced “Lou Bay”) explain the meaning behind their interesting name: “We heard something on the radio about Liu Bei, a Chinese warlord who was known as an amazing strategist and a really caring, benevolent leader. He was also eight feet tall and had ears so big he could see them. Seemed like something to aspire to.” The members, who created the band last summer, find inspirations from artists like Mazzy Star, Slowdive and Ride.
