2012: A Year in Fashion
December 29, 2012 § Leave a comment
As 2012 comes to a close with only a few days to spare, I’ve taken the time to look back at all the fashion highlights from this year!
Check out all my top moments below:
Best Fall 2012 Shows: Proenza Schouler & Celine
Best Spring 2013 Shows: Dries Van Noten, Givenchy & Lanvin
These three shows were the definition of the cool, modern woman of 2012. At Dries Van Noten, the designer took the ubiquitous “Grunge” look to another level. The plaids were luxurious and the mix of prints were fun and not clashing at all. With Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci toned down his usual bold look for a silhouette that was more classic yet still had a futuristic edge – thanks to the palette of white, taupe, onyx and robin’s egg blue. For Lanvin, Alber Elbaz re-imagined the Parisienne as a confident and sultry woman -with his tailored suits and shimmering dresses.
Editorial of the Year: W Magazine’s March Issue’s “Good Kate, Bad Kate” featuring Kate Moss & shot by Steven Klein
Most Controversial Designer: Hedi Slimane
The news of Hedi Slimane taking over Yves Saint Laurent as creative director broke back in February, around the same time as Raf Simons departed from Jil Sander. Slimane is not one to follow rules, as seen when the designer decided to officially change the name of the luxury company to “Saint Laurent” which was accompanied by a new, sleeker logo. His debut collection for YSL during Spring 2013 fashion week also rattled a few fashion brains. Critics calling it “disappointing and confusing” while fashion buyers praised it as a “classic YSL” collection. Slimane made quite an entrance in 2012 for YSL – let’s see what else he has up his sleeve for 2013!
Model of the Year: Cara Delevingne
This British beauty single-handedly brought back humor and good fun to the fashion industry. As goofy as she is stunning, Cara Delevingne strutted various catwalks during fashion weeks, dominated editorials from the major magazines like US Vogue, i-D, Elle France and W, and was featured in ad campaigns for Burberry, Chanel and Zara. Plus, her face was plastered all over Tumblr – making her the unofficial “Tumblr girl” of 2012.
