54th Annual Grammy Nominations: Where’s Beyonce?

December 1, 2011 § Leave a comment

Whenever award show nominations come around, I am usually shocked, pleased or annoyed. With the 54th Annual Grammy Awards nominations presented last night, those feelings rushed right back. I made a post similar to this back in August when the 2011 VMAs snubbed Rihanna, and I never thought I was going to do one again. But, here I am today.

Most of the category nominees were predictable, but some of them actually surprised me (both on good and bad terms).

Kanye West leads the pack with seven nominations, with Adele holding her own with 21 nominated for Record of the Year and her smash single “Rolling in the Deep” nominated for both Record and Song of the Year. Foo Fighters round out the top three with six nominations.

2010-2011 was a great period for all three artists/bands, so I am happy to see their work being recognized. Adele especially, she totally owned this year with her incredible sophomore album.

The category that surprised me the most was Best New Artist. Dubstep producer Skrillex, newcomer to the rap game J. Cole and much-loved Bon Iver were all nominated. I excitedly have my eyes set on who wins this one!

One of my qualms with this year’s nominations is the Best Rap Album category. Everyone knows that Tha Carter IV was a horrible album despite its ridiculous amount of sales, and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday is just not Grammy-worthy.

Another issue I have is with Rihanna’s Loud being nominated for Album of the Year. If you read this blog, it is painfully obvious that I am a Rihanna fan. I love Loud, but compared to other albums that came out in the past year, it does not hold its own. But I am very happy that the album is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album; that category makes more sense.

The biggest qualm I have with this year’s Grammy nominations is the abscence of Beyonce. I have supported 4 since its release and looking past sales and chart lists (because I don’t think that is crucial) I think it is Beyonce’s best album to date. “Party” is nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, but to not have the album itself be nominated for anything boggles my mind.

I know many won’t agree with me when I say 4 should have been nominated for Album of the Year, the council could have at least given it a Best R&B Album nod. But 4 didn’t receive anything.

The big category nominations are as follows:

Album Of The Year:

21 — Adele

Wasting Light — Foo Fighters

Born This Way — Lady Gaga

Doo-Wops & Hooligans — Bruno Mars

Loud — Rihanna

Record Of The Year:

“Rolling In The Deep” — Adele

“Holocene” — Bon Iver

“Grenade” — Bruno Mars

“The Cave” — Mumford & Sons

“Firework” — Katy Perry

Best New Artist:

The Band Perry

Bon Iver

J. Cole

Nicki Minaj

Song Of The Year:

“All Of The Lights” — Jeff Bhasker, Malik Jones, Warren Trotter & Kanye West, songwriters (Kanye West, Rihanna, Kid Cudi & Fergie)

“The Cave” — Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford & Country Winston, songwriters (Mumford & Sons)

“Grenade” — Brody Brown, Claude Kelly, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars & Andrew Wyatt, songwriters (Bruno Mars)

“Holocene” — Justin Vernon, songwriter (Bon Iver)

“Rolling In The Deep” — Adele Adkins & Paul Epworth, songwriters (Adele)
